  13. New CD-ROM Product Brings Valuable Information to Macintosh Users
  14. for a Single Annual Fee

  16. CUPERTINO, California--October 7, 1992--Apple Computer, Inc. today
  17. announced AppleLink CD, an information resource product on CD-ROM.
  18. AppleLink CD delivers regular editions of Apple and third party
  19. product and support information for a single annual subscription fee.
  20.     AppleLink CD offers Macintosh computer users access to a wealth of
  21. information previously available only through AppleLink, Apple's
  22. global electronic communications and information service.  Unlike
  23. most on-line services, however, the new product requires no modems,
  24. special phone lines, or extra software.  With only a Macintosh
  25. personal computer and a Macintosh-compatible CD-ROM drive, users can
  26. explore technical, product, program, and special interest information
  27. without time or cost limitations.
  28.     "AppleLink CD helps to create an information rich computing
  29. environment for Macintosh users," said Peter Friedman, director of
  30. Apple Online Services.  "AppleLink CD will bring together much of the
  31. high quality information from Apple and third parties that's behind
  32. AppleLink--essentially making it the easiest and most cost effective
  33. way to access AppleLink information without actually going on-line."
  34.     The familiar Macintosh interface, combined with an on-line help
  35. feature, makes AppleLink CD easy to setup, learn and use.  And the
  36. yearly one-time fee means users don't have to worry about cost or
  37. time limitations as they would if they were accessing the information
  38. on-line.  The multi-user version of AppleLink CD will allow
  39. additional users to access the information as a shared volume on an
  40. AppleTalk network.

  42. Information Content
  43.     Each edition of AppleLink CD will include an extensive technical
  44. information library—the same one used by Apple's own technical
  45. support staff—as well as product data, public articles, and
  46. documentation for solutions to hardware and software problems.  Also
  47. included on the CD will be descriptions of Apple products, and
  48. technical, marketing, and support materials from more than 400
  49. Macintosh-compatible hardware and software manufacturers.
  50.     A special Software Sampler section will contain 15MB of Apple
  51. software updates as well as free software and shareware for the
  52. Macintosh.  Users will be able to download free software
  53. demonstrations and review new software programs.
  54.     In addition, the special interest areas will allow users to browse
  55. numerous bulletin board conferences from the extensive AppleLink on-
  56. line discussion areas or investigate specific topic areas such as K-
  57. 12 education, multimedia, enterprise computing, and design &
  58. publishing.
  59.     AppleLink CD is produced by Apple's information services unit, Apple
  60. Online Services (AOS). Other Apple Online Services products include
  61. AppleLink, Apple's global on-line professional service.  Introduced
  62. in 1985 to enhance communication between Apple Computer, its business
  63. partners and customers, AppleLink today includes over 50,000
  64. subscribers in the worldwide Apple Community in 55 countries.

  67.     AppleLink CD requires a Macintosh computer running System 6.0.7 or
  68. later and a Macintosh-compatible CD-ROM drive.  4MB (RAM) random
  69. access memory is required.

  72. Price and Availability
  73.     AppleLink CD will be available worldwide in January 1993.  Initially,
  74. AppleLink CD will be available through an annual subscription for
  75. four quarterly editions; other options may become available in the
  76. future.  Pricing and availability will vary by country.
  77.     In the U.S., a one year subscritpion, which includes four quarterly
  78. editions, is available in a single-user version for $299 or a mutli-
  79. user version for $649.  Please check with your Apple representative
